A plaque on Calne's Town Hall records the feats of local man Walter Goodall George, who was the world's fastest miler for twenty-nine years. The plaque was, appropriately, unveiled by Sydney Wooderson - the first Briton to break George's record. The inscription above it records the visit by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1907.
