Plaque marking the opening of the A30 Okehampton by-pass

This is in a lay-by for the eastward lane of the dual carriageway. It does not mention the controversy of building a road through a National Park. It reads: A30 Okehampton bypass/ opened by Peter Bottomley MP/ Minister for Roads and Traffic/ on 19th July 1988/ Department for Transport South-West Region/ Director W E Gallagher/ Designers Devon County Council/ Engineer M R Hawking OBE/ Contractor John Vowley & Company PLC/ Chairman Sir Philip Beck (I have used / for new lines). Why were some of the named people given initials, and other forenames? Beyond the fence are open fields. There is a well-worn path behind the stone to the shelter of some bushes for calls of nature!
