William Robertson Smith plaque

Smith was a leading figure in the Free Church and a highly prolific Biblical scholar: Link . His views on the historical (in)accuracy of the Bible were too much for some conservatives and he was put on trial for "heresy" (Link ) in 1878. He was found not guilty, but dismissed from his post of professor at the Free Church College in Aberdeen (which is now a raucous nightclub).
