Apple Tree Cove - Kingston

APPLE TREE COVE - KINGSTON

Apple Tree Cover was named by Lieut. Charles
Wilkes, U.S.N., commanding the U.S. Exploring
Expedition, which first charted Puget Sound, on
May 18, 1841.
The first sawmill and the first houses built of
sawn lumber known to have been built in Kitsap
County were erected on the south shore of the cove
in the winter of 1852-1853. One of the earliest skid
roads in what later became the State of Washington
was laid out here in the 18502.
The Kingston townsite was platted by C.C.
Calkins, Nellie Calkins, and S.B. Brierly, April 21,
1890.

The plaque erected in June, 1982, by
Kingston Cover Port Commission
Kingston Community Action Council
Kitsap County Historical Society
