This plaque tells the story of this small church "Blauwkapel". The church was built around the year 1550. It's the smallest gothic cruciform church in the Netherlands, measuring only 22 meters (24 yards) long by 5.5 / 11 meters (6 / 12 yards) wide. The church is at the site of a fortress that was built in 1818-1821, and thus it became very isolated. In world war 2 the church was used as a stable for horses. In 1957 it was bought by a foundation who restored it, and used it for people who are not part of a specific church movement (oecumenisch) .The Tower has a different owner than the rest of the church. The tower is owned by the municipality of Utrecht, because of a rule that Napoleon Bonaparte introduced around 1800. Many church towers were confiscated and made part of a strategic plan to support a Chappe Telegraph network of signs all the way to Paris. Submitted by Danny Kalkhoven
